Welcome back to the blog! It’s “Shoutouts Saturday”! This is the time where we put the spotlight on fellow Carolina BOSS Girls in Action! These are the girls and women across the states who are putting their dreams in action and making BIG moves.

Today’s spotlight is on miss Sheridan Chi–owner of “Goddess Rootz“, an online beauty bar making BOSS moves.

We at C.G.I.A. wanted to get to know the Goddess Rootz owner a little better, so we asked her a few questions.

How did the idea for your business come about?

♥Well I’ve always wanted to have my own business so it was always in the back of my head, but I didn’t really have the money to start on what I actually wanted to do. I was just going off one day on how tired I am of people wearing those little black Chokers that had no style or spark to them. (I’m a big fan of chokers.) So one day I was talking to my sister and all of sudden a bell rung and I was like OHHHH I should make my own chokers and sale them! And from that point on me and my sister stayed up all night and next day making a website and Etsy account and working on a logo and that’s where it all started.

Sheridan rocking one of her very own chokers that you can purchase from “Goddess Rootz”.

What has been some of your failures and what did you learn from them?

♥My failures have actually been not planning things out before actually making moves. In the beginning when it was only just Chokers. I did not plan out anything, I just dived right in which was a big mistake because I made business cards and ended up changing my mind about the design and everything I wanted on there so I had to keep buying business cards which of course was messing with my pockets. Also not marketing enough. A BUSINESS PLAN is MAJOR key for a successful business and MARKETING is MAJOR key as well so make sure you do both. Now with this new re-launching of the site I can successfully say that everything is so much better as far as a business plan and so much more. My journey with goddessrootz has definitely taught me a lot and now I’m ready to take over the world 🙌🏽 #goddessrootzmob ISSA MOVEMENT 💓 #woman-empowerment 💓

What is the one piece of advice you would give to young entrepreneurs like yourself?

♥I would say don’t look at others success and compare it to yours. That will get you nowhere! You have to focus on your brand and what exciting new things YOU can bring that is different to this world of entrepreneurship. Be unique and be yourself and know that through hard work and dedication that your time is coming! Don’t rush it, take it day by day! And pray over your business.

Work-it-out Wednesday! Stop Talking…Just DO it.

Posted on Updated on

We say it at the start of each new month, right?

“Okay, this time, I’m gonna do it for REAL.”

Whether we’re talking about our health, bettering our relationships, going to school…again…It’s always the same spiel. And it stays as such. Just a spiel. Not our reality. You know why? Because at the end of the day—we don’t know what we truly want.

What? That’s not true.

I want to be healthy.

I want to be happy in my love life.

I want to graduate.

Okay, but what does that actually look like?

You want to be healthy. Fine. But what does that mean? What does being healthy mean to you? What do your meals look like each day? What do you do for exercise? What size pants are you wearing once you’ve reached your goal?

You want your love life to be a happy love life? What does that mean? Do you guys dance in the middle of the kitchen in your pajamas together at midnight? Good communication? Do you two work well together? Are you a stay-at-home mom and he brings home the bacon?

You want to graduate? Okay, so for starters, did you enroll? (And yes, I’m talking to myself right here.) What classes do you need to take to get that degree? Do you stay in touch with your advisor? What outfit are you going to wear under that cap and gown? What job are you going to have after you graduate?

Let’s stop—TALKING—and DO.

Picture that thing that you want and run after it full speed!

After all this being said, it’s Work-it-out Wednesday for the blog, and my own personal goal for my health journey was to make small changes each week. The first small change? Simply walking 10 minutes a day. And of course today is the HOTTEST day that it has been in weeks. But whatever. I wrote out my plan and I’m sticking to it. I have my goals written down, and now all that is left to do is reach them!

The Somewhat Uncomfortable Topic.

Posted on Updated on

ahhh

Let’s talk puberty!

Nooo don’t groan! This talk will be fun, I PROMISE.

So you were like 8,9,10,11,12,13 when something funny started happening to your body right? I mean all types of weird stuff. You started noticing that you had boobs—tiny ones or maybe a tad bit rounder ones—and then you noticed that hair was growing in all types of weird places.

 Image

You might have had a growth spurt that made you a bit clumsy—in some cases, terribly clumsy.

 clumsy

And then one day your tummy started to hurt or you felt a little too uncomfortable and OMG you were on your first period!

Tears
Dis tew much 😦

The point here? It’s that you are not alone. You are not the only girl who has ever gone through any of this before. Puberty? It’s the norm.

You may have gone through it earlier than most girls, or later, or maybe it came around at the average time, but the big picture is that no one is more “special” or “cooler” than you are just because of their physical development.

Back when I was in middle school, it was a “bad thing” to be made curvy. Back then you were just considered “fat”. Currently, the “popular” trend is to be curvy. To sum it all up? Trends suck. When one thing is in, the other one is out. How lame.

disgusted
So. Lame.

Why can’t everything just be “in” at the same time?

Here at Carolina Girls in Action, we know that a trend doesn’t define how “cool”, “popular”, or “attractive” we are. At C.G.I.A. we know that everyone is unique and everyone is “cool”, “popular”, and “attractive” in our book.

My prayer for you all is that God’s light will burn brightly in your lives!

My mother once hit me with a brainteaser that absolutely blew my mind.let-there-be-light_360_360_80

“So yeah, in the beginning, God said ‘Let there be light’…and there was light…but did you ever notice how it also says that the sun and moon weren’t created until the third and fourth day?”

I’m just gonna let that marinate for a moment.

How amazing is God that He can actually supply light without using actual, physical, light?

So where was the light coming from?

Who knows? I’m guessing the light was coming from…well, Him.

My point is, if God is great enough to supply the entire atmosphere with light, I am absolutely positive that He can shine in your life as well–and believe that He is already doing so!

God’s light is in everything. Physical, mental, and spiritual.

It’s in the trees, the rain, the aurora borealis (sigh of awe).

It’s in your teachers, your pets, your kids.

It’s in the library, the church, the hospital.
It’s in truth, love, laughter–it’s in all components of life.

Many times we are so blinded by the darkness that we forget about the life source that we most need at that time.

Light.

I suppose my prayer isn’t so much that God will shine in your life–because He is already doing so, you see?

My prayer is truly that you will realize how it has been YOU keeping yourself from shining brightly in all areas of your life and that you will take responsibility and uncover the light.

May God continue to be with you and give you strength to run your race!

Sending you MUCH Light and Love,

Kay.

Peace Be Unto You!

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world

He says it himself! If he did it, we can too!

God did NOT promise us an easy life on earth.

The only time life will be perfect is when we are dead and gone on to live with Him. But don’t get so ready to pack your bags and leave just yet! If you are still alive, you are alive for a reason. (When C.G.I.A. has its second key release, we will be teaching you all how to find your purpose for living!)

But remember to keep that in mind! You are here for a reason.

Yeah, yeah, we know. Your boyfriend just dumped you to “work on himself”, you’ve gained 26 pounds in 2 months, your bank account only has 37 dollars in it, your car won’t start up again for the third time this month and now you’re late for work. We know. God knows. We all get it.

But you have two choices. Either crawl up in a ball, collecting gray hairs from stress, eating the rest of the tub of ice cream that you just bought 20 minutes ago, or you can let the pain/hurt/lies/bankruptcy go right back out the door that it came in through.

peace john 14 27

You simply have to find your escape route!

To find your route or your path, you’ll need a light. (…you see where this is going?) Jesus is the light!

Escape route 1.

Use prayer and faith in order to aim that light on your problems! His light is so bright that the problems will burn away, and you will then have a clear path before you!

Psalm 112:4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness

And yes, sometimes it’s good to pray for yourself. But more importantly;

Escape route 2.

Remember to pray for other people! Whenever you are going through your darkest times…like all the happiness is sucked away from you, that is when you should begin to pray for someone else. The main times when we are unhappy are when we are stuck in a rut thinking about ourselves! When we begin to stop putting ourselves as the main focus of our lives (sounds backwards, we know) that’s when we are the happiest. Pray for others with a sincere heart. Don’t just say, “God bless whats-his-name”. Pray for them what you would like for your own self! Happiness, Peace, Love, Health, Strength, etc.

Remember to keep your mind on God’s love, light, and lessons.

Remember that you can do ALL things through Christ!

When in times of trouble or hurt, ask God to bring back to remembrance all the things that you have learned from Him. He’ll do it!

John 14:26 …he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you

Peace be unto you all!

Grab an M&M! (Some Motivation from Monday)!

Posted on Updated on

A few nuggets to take with you from Monday’s post:
🔹M&M 1: John 8:12 “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Once we choose to follow His light, we banish all opportunity of darkness to consume us!
🔹M&M 2: Once you begin following Him, you will become so infused with His light that you will begin reflecting the light! You won’t even have to tell anyone about your new lifestyle because they will see that you have already changed–not just because of your glow, but by your actions and new faith that you will begin to release.

🔹M&M 3: Stay unwavering in your faith, and He will put a new song in your mouth! Sing it for all to hear!

***1 Peter 3:15 “…always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you…”

Actions Speak Louder than Words

Posted on Updated on

Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

We slightly touched on this topic in our last blog post “Be the Light”.

We talked about how we should remember that as “lights of the world” we are instructed to shine our light in dark places so that ALL may see His Truth and Goodness.

To spread the light, we simply share our faith and what all we have learned from God, Spirit, Allah, (whomever/whatever you choose to believe in) on our individual life journeys.

Another way of spreading the light is mentioned in this Bible verse as well. “…that they may see your good works…”

Here’s a fun question. In order for you to get full usage of the sun…does it ever have to talk to you first? actions speak

Well, we hope that most of you answered ‘No!’

To get good usage from any light source, the light doesn’t have to say anything at all. It simply shines, shows us whatever we need to see, and gets the job done.

That’s how we must also be. Yes, sometimes we may need to share a word with others, but honestly, and you’ve heard it a billion times before, ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. It doesn’t matter if you say the most buttery-sweet things. If after that you get in a fight, or throw litter on the ground, or decide to “twerk sum’ girl!” at your friend’s house party, people’s original thoughts about you will change. If you’re okay with that, well then, okay. More power to you. Just make sure that when their thoughts begin to change, you give them good things to think about you.

Remember that everything you do on earth is to glorify and honor the One who decided to put you on earth.

No one is asking you to be perfect. We all make mistakes.

But also, and the Bible itself says so, “You can do all things through Christ”. Ask God to give you the strength necessary to put your best foot forward and to practice what you preach.

Shine your light so that others can see Him working in your life!

You can do it.

You can do all things!

Sending you Light and Love,

The C.G.I.A. Foundation
